An Ontology for Processing Service Orchestration

Presentation by Mingda Zhang and Josh Leiberman

Thursday, July 20, Noon - 1:00, Room S354, CGIS South Building (1730 Cambridge St.)

Abstract: With the advancement of Web service technologies, more and more spatial data and analysis functions are available on the web. Scientific workflows are widely used to orchestrate services to solve complex geospatial problems. However, it is still difficult to find appropriate services to construct a workflow, and reuse or refine existing workflows to solve similar problems. It is important to describe workflow in a way that makes them more adaptable, sharable, reusable and traceable. The authors developed Ontology for Processing Service Orchestration (OPSO) to empower domain experts to explore large datasets and complex processing workflows iteratively and collaboratively. OPSO represents three aspects of workflows: template, instance and provenance, using Semantic Web technologies.  Mingda will also discuss and demonstrate the integration of OPSO within the GeoJModelBuilder tool.

Speaker Bios:

Mingda Zhang is a visiting fellow at the Center for Geographic Analysis. He is a Ph.D. candidate from Wuhan University, majoring in Cartography and Geographic Information Engineering. His research interests include linked data, geospatial services, and integrated environmental modeling.

Josh Lieberman is a senior research scientist at CGA working on hydrographic ontologies and semantic applications for the U.S. National Map as part of the new Spatiotemporal Innovation Center. He also serves as a coordinating architect and initiative manager for the Open Geospatial Consortium and as a lecturer at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Josh has a Ph.D.

Lunch will be served.
