Abstract:

DigitalGlobe’s Sam Birnbaum and Todd Bacastow will speak about DG’s Earth imagery, and introduce initiatives beyond the pixel in predictive mapping and crowdsourced data mining. Although DigitalGlobe utilizes many open source datasets for analysis, many areas of the world have sparse coverage. In these locations, DG uses its private crowdsourcing platform, GeoHIVE (Human Imagery Verification Effort), to enrich the geospatial landscape. More on the GeoHIVE project here.

DigitalGlobe (DG) is a leading global provider of commercial high-resolution Earth observation and geospatial solutions. DG owns and operates the world’s largest and most sophisticated constellation of high-resolution commercial satellites. WorldView-1, GeoEye-1, WorldView-2 and Worldview-3 together are capable of collecting more than 3 billion km2 of imagery per year, and offer intra-day revisits around the globe.

Speakers:

Sam Birnbaum is the Project Lead for DigitalGlobe’s GeoHIVE crowdsourcing platform. He joined DigitalGlobe in 2013 as an Intelligence Analyst for the Human Geography Information Surveys program. In that capacity Sam layered DG’s industry leading Earth imagery with geospatial and demographic data, and authored reports on population movement and violence trends in North Africa and the Middle East. Sam previously worked for the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and in the office of Congressman Matt Cartwright, where he focused on immigration, healthcare and foreign policy issues. In 2012 he was a Visiting Fellow at the Center for Strategic & International Studies, supporting the Africa Program in its investigation of barriers to investment in Sub-Saharan Africa. Sam graduated Phi Beta Kappa with High Honors from the University of Michigan, earning a Bachelor’s degree in International and Comparative Studies. In his senior thesis, Sam challenged Western perceptions of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood.

Todd Bacastow is Director of Product Management at DigitalGlobe where he works to incubate, launch, and grow products that help answer key geospatial questions for decision makers. Todd joined DigitalGlobe through the acquisitions of GeoEye, and prior to that SPADAC. Todd worked closely with the founding leadership team as Manager of Strategic Initiatives. Before joining SPADAC, Todd was an Associate at FirstMark Capital, a New York-based venture capital firm with more than $2 billion in committed capital. At FirstMark, he identified investment opportunities in growing technology companies, performed deal execution, and supported the management teams of companies within FirstMark’s portfolio. Prior to his experience in venture capital, Todd was an Analyst in Investment Banking for the Media and Telecommunications Group at Merrill Lynch. Todd is a 2005 graduate of The Pennsylvania State University’s Schreyer Honors College earning a B.S. in Information Sciences and Technology with Highest Distinction.
