GIS Data for China

The Harvard Library now subscribes to the China GeoExplorer system from the University of Michigan’s China Data Center. It offers China demographic and economic data, maps, charts and reports in a web-based delivery system.  Data sources include demographic and business information for all PRC geographies, including 31 Provinces, 345 Prefecture Cities, 2,873 Counties, and over 50,000 Townships.

Harvard faculty, students, researchers and staff can access the Harvard subscription here: http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:hul.eresource:chinageoexplr Depending on your IP, you will be prompted for your HUID and PIN.

The GeoExplorer is part of a larger set of resources called China Data Online, which is available here: http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:hul.eresource:chinadat

Harvard Map Collection Updates

There is now a search interface for printed maps in the Harvard Map Collection that are not included in HOLLIS, the Harvard on-line library catalog.  The Harvard Libraries Imaging Services group has scanned and performed OCR on the cards in the Map Collection card catalog, with descriptive information available for about 80% of the paper collection.  The descriptions aren’t as structured as a modern catalog record, so this is a full text search with no facets/search limits. You can also browse the cards just as you would if you came into the reading room.  The maps represented are from the antiquarian (pre-1900) and modern collections.  The link to the search interface is: http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:FHCL:013396766. It can also be found by searching HOLLIS for “Harvard Map Collection Shelflist”

Harvard Geospatial Library Updates

New vector data (66 layers) covering Israel have been added to the Harvard Geospatial Library and is available to Harvard affiliates.  In addition, 100 new scanned, georeferenced historic maps from around the world have been added and are available to the public.  http://hgl.harvard.edu
