HARVARD RETURNED TO GEOGRAPHY

This past Friday, Harvard Returned to Geography under a bright spotlight. Some say it was Geography that Returned to Harvard. Certainly the presence of the past, present, and next presidents of the AAG showed that at least some geographers were coming to Harvard, if only for a day. The presence of David Maguire and Jack Dangermond from ESRI made clear that this event was not being ignored by the GIS software industry either. But the reality is that our efforts will continue to depend on each one of us in the geographic analysis profession to build on what we have already created, so that geographic analysis will contribute to excellence in teaching and research of many disciplines.

Slide presentations, a poster gallery and video files of speaker presentations will be available on-line. Please check the CGA web site for updates: http://www.gis.harvard.edu

CGA Research Support
In addition to CGA’s wide variety of services provided, we now offer University-wide assistance for research projects, seminar series and colloquia involving geographic analysis and mapping. Assistance will be granted via an application process, and may consist of any of the following: dedication of staff time, hiring of specialized staff, funding of postdoctoral fellowships, support for graduate students, funds for data acquisition, or whatever may be appropriate. More info at the link below, under the CGA Research Support Policies heading.
http://gis.harvard.edu/icb/icb.do?keyword=k235&pageid=icb.page22830

Georeferencing Workshop March 21

WORKSHOP UPDATE: Over 60 people are signed up for the upcoming georeferencing workshop – “Challenges of and solutions for assigning geographic location to digital information - a cross-disciplinary problem,”. Registration is open through Monday, March 17. Visit the link below for online registration.
http://gis.harvard.edu/icb/icb.do?keyword=k235&pageid=icb.page24711

POSTER SESSION: Eleven posters will be on display at the workshop showcasing completed or ongoing projects which involve georeferencing or spatial analysis, and more are welcomed. The submission deadline for posters is March 14th. See the flyer for more details:

Africa Map
The Africa Map project addresses a basic problem for all scholarship on Africa that treats where things happen as necessary to understanding how and why they happen: finding places on a map. Numerous Harvard academic departments are collaborating with the CGA on this project, with the following goals: 1) Allow interaction with the best available public data for Africa, 2) See the whole of Africa yet also zoom in to particular places, 3) Accumulate both contemporary and historical data supplied by researchers and make it permanently accessible online, and 4) Work collaboratively across disciplines and organizations with spatial information about Africa in an online environment. More about the project:
http://africamap.harvard.edu

Time Enabled KML Conversion Tool
Time-Enabled KML Conversion Library (teKML) is a Java API and command line application for converting geodata vector files with time attributes into KML with time elements. When opened in Google Earth V4 or higher, files processed by teKML will automatically enable the Time Bar control, allowing visualization of geographic data as it happens over time. teKML accepts shapefiles and many other vector geographic data types. For more information and to download the tool:

CGA on PBS – video clip
The CGA developed materials to geographically represent the genetic history of Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., for the PBS documentary “African American Lives 2” segment “The Past Is Another Country”. A portion of this program featured Ben Lewis of the CGA, discussing and demonstrating the mapping he created with Dr. Gates. The 3 minute video excerpt can be found on CGA’s project resume page (link below), under the first topic: Mapping Genetic History.

CGA NEWS

Report: Spatially Enabling HMDC Social Science Data
Last July, Dr. Nicole Alexander, a CGA Visiting Researcher, worked on a HMDC/VDC Users Survey on spatially enabling the social science data sets. Since then, Nicole has been documenting the user requirements gathered, and examining the HMDC data. She will present her findings to HMDC/VDC users on April 10th, 12:00-1:30pm in CGIS South Building (1730 Cambridge St.), the Belfer Case Study room (S020). Lunch will be provided. Please RSVP.

Seminar: Introduction to the China Data Center and the Integration of GIS with China Population Census Data
The China Data Center at the University of Michigan is an international center for advancing the study and understanding of China. This presentation will give an introduction to the Center and demonstrate China data products, data services, and recent research projects. Projects include statistical data, financial data, spatial data, a survey data network, and the applications of China data in research and education. New toolkits (desktop software and web-based services) will be introduced for advanced spatial data analysis and mapping. Dr. Shuming Bao, China Data Center, University of Michigan will present on Friday, March 23, 11:00am-12:00pm, CGIS Knafel Building (1737 Cambridge St.), Rm. N354.

Guoping Huang and Lex Berman to Present at ABCD TIE Meeting
Guoping will discuss a project, funded by the Harvard Provost Fund for Instructional Technology, to build a historical spatial database for the class “History 1111: The Fall of the Roman Empire”. The database is created from georeferenced paper maps and other related resources and will give students the freedom to query historical places spatially and interactively. The database is suitable for continuous improvement and adaptation in future teaching and research.

Lex will discuss the Geographic Information Sharing Tool for Google Earth developed with the support of a Harvard Provost Innovation Grant. The tool has been developed to provide faculty and students a means of working with geospatial information in using the free version of Google Earth as the user interface. With Google Earth, users create their own Folders and Placemarks, then save them as KML format files. GIST provides a web-based form that allows users to upload KML files, and also a parser that ingests the features and their coordinates to a relational database. You are welcome to create your own user in the PUBLIC area of the working application at http://gist.fas.harvard.edu

The two talks will be on April 2, 12:15 - 1:45 in the Harvard University Lamont Library Forum Room. A light lunch will be provided.

CGA Introduced at LiMIT Program
Wendy Guan will introduce GIS and CGA services in a break-out session of the Libraries, Museums, and Instructional Technology (LiMIT) Program, March 28, invitation only. For more information contact Mary Spidle, the Project Manager for Academic Computing.

Street Data Available in Convenient Format
An alternative to downloading US streets files for the entire US is now available. The Harvard Geospatial Library (HGL) has created a layer file (.lyr) available which can be loaded to ArcMap and which makes the necessary connections to SDE on the HGL server to provide access to the Street Map data. See StreetMapUSA.lyr athttp://www.gis.harvard.edu/icb/icb.do?keyword=k235&pageid=icb.page28957

One important note on using the layer file: you must provide the IP address of your machine to HGL to enable this functionality. Contact CGA with your name and IP address, and please allow up to 24 hours for the request to be processed.

CaGIS Special Issue: Mapping Cyberspace and Social Media

Mapping cyberspace and social media (such as Twitter, Facebook, weblogs, Flickr, and YouTube) becomes a new research direction for cartographers and GIScientists to visualize and study human thoughts, group behaviors, global issues, and communication theories. With the new media (e.g., the Web and online social networks), scientists can trace geographic and chronological patterns of messages to reveal the diffusion of news, ideas, concepts, and public opinions in response to radical issues, social movements, natural disasters, or epidemic outbreaks. This special issue of Cartography and Geographic Information Science will assemble prominent research papers and discussions from multiple disciplines with the focus on pursuing basic scientific questions as well as the development of new cartographic and visualization methods. July 1 is the deadline to provide an early expression of interest with a draft title and an abstract (300 words) by email to mtsou@mail.sdsu.edu

China Earthquake Webmap and Data Sharing Portal
In response to a call for volunteer support for damage assessment of the devastating Wenchuan earthquake, staff at the CGA have built a web mapping site, publishing base map and earthquake data from multiple sources on the Internet:
http://cga2.cga.harvard.edu:8399/China_Earthquake
Also a flyer with more information:
http://isites.harvard.edu/fs/docs/icb.topic35229.files/china_earthquake.pdf

In addition, CGA has created a China Earthquake Geospatial Research Portal:
http://gist.fas.harvard.edu/CEGRP/
for information exchanges and sharing. The CEGRP website is a gateway to maps, GIS data, and GIS analysis to facilitate and to share research efforts focused on the recent earthquakes in China. The CEGRP will collect, document, and distribute GIS datasets and related information to assist in the earthquake related research.

The Fairbank Center has committed $10,000 to CGA for enhancing these websites, and we want to hear from Harvard and other interested researchers on what data to add to the site. Please email us at contact@cga.harvard.edu with suggestions.

Sichuan University Collaborative Research Opportunity
Sichuan University has launched a series of research projects on the Wenchuan earthquake assessment. These researching groups will collect local information, conduct surveys, and are willing to share the information for collaborative studies. Research topics are listed below:

  1. Study on the distribution of material aids and capital during earthquake relief.
  2. Emergency response in ecological environment management after the earthquake.
  3. Damage evaluation of culture heritage and suggestions on recovery.
  4. Public health issues in earthquake relief and suggestions.
  5. Special issues with civil and commercial law after the earthquake.
  6. Study on how to respond to administrative and legal issues after the earthquake.
  7. Study on psychological assistance after the Earthquake.
  8. Rebuilding the image of the city and tourism.
  9. Study on how to use media as a way to console victims.
  10. Feasibility analysis on economic recovery and reconstruction after the earthquake.

If there is interest in joining these research projects, contact us at contact@cga.harvard.edu on how to get involved.

CGA Contact Email Address to Change July 1
The contact email address for CGA will change to contact@help.cga.harvard.edu starting July 1, 2008. To make this change as transparent as possible, all links pointing to the current contact@cga.harvard.edu address will be changed, and emails sent will be forwarded to the new address. The change is being made to accommodate the new RT ticketing system CGA will begin using July 1.

New Summer Location for HSPH Help Desk
The Monday afternoon HSPH help desk location in the Lower Level microlab of the Kresge building (677 Huntington Ave., Boston) will be changing as of June 9th, 2008. The new location will be Room 206 (2nd floor) in the same building. The microlab is being remodeled; expected completion is late August, 2008.
