CGA’s January GIS Camp: Spatial Thinking and Analysis with GIS
The CGA is offering a four-day non-credit workshop on January 18-21, titled “Spatial Thinking and Analysis with GIS.” Harvard undergraduates have priority, but Harvard graduate students may apply also. Application Deadline is Thursday, December 9 @ noon. Go to our GIS Institutes page to learn more and apply:

CGA Spring Conference: Geospatial Collaboration – New Common Ground
Our annual spring conference will be held May 6 and 7, 2011, focusing on geospatial collaboration. Geospatial technology weaves its way into our daily lives and work flows as never before, and as mapping moves from the desktop to the web, an explosion of innovation is expanding the base, not only of map users but also of map makers, to include just about anyone with an internet connection. The way we map is changing the way we work.  This two-day conference will bring web-mapping experts from across the country to Harvard to share their knowledge and experience, and to envision what lies ahead. Speakers will introduce ideas, systems, tools, and visions, and present case studies and discuss challenges.  Some will offer live demos and hands-on training.  This conference provides a forum for geospatial technologists, developers, academics and end users to engage in dialog and help shape the future of geospatial technology on the Internet. Full conference details will be published on our website and in the January Newsletter.

Harvard University Web Map
This is a demonstration version of an interactive internet map application for Harvard’s campuses using ESRI’s ArcGIS Server technology. In addition to a base map showing streets and buildings, etc., it includes map layers for bicycle facilities, museums, buildings with wireless LAN access, and accessibility and alternative energy projects.  Many additional layers are under development, and suggestions are welcome. Search and query interaction is also possible. Because the data layers are available as map services, they can be directly incorporated into projects by desktop ArcGIS Map users.  View the map:

Submit comments on the map and read others at the map’s blog site: http://map.harvard.edu/blog

HealthMap on the iPhone
This iPhone app allows you to search and browse H1N1 or other disease reports on an interactive map, set alerts that send notices automatically whenever an outbreak is occurring in your area, and allows for individual reporting of outbreaks.  The app is based on the Healthmap.org global disease alert map created in part by Harvard Medical School.

CGA Colloquium: GIS-Based Resolution of Geographic Problems
By Joshua Comenetz, Ph.D., Department of Geography, University of Florida Thursday, November 16, 2006, 4:00pm-5:00pm, CGIS Knafel Building, Rm. N262 Digital cartographic methods can be used to combine multiple layers of information and incompatible data sets to answer demographic questions. Better results are achieved when census and other digital data sets are enhanced with information from non-GIS-based sources, such as historical maps and the literature of international relations and sociology. Studies of the demographic consequences of climatic disaster in Ethiopia, and the settlement patterns of American Indians and Hasidic Jews in the US, illustrate this process.

Microsoft released Virtual Earth 3D on Nov.6. It’s not a stand-alone application like Google Earth. Rather, a 5Mb download of a browser plug-in, and you have to use Internet Explorer 6 or 7. 3D models of 15 cities are available now: San Francisco, Seattle, Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Baltimore, Dallas-Fort Worth, Atlanta, Denver, Detroit, San Jose, Phoenix and Houston. More than 100, including international cities, are expected by summer 2007 and perhaps 5,000 in five years. Microsoft offers a developer API for the 3D environment similar to its existing one for Virtual Earth. (Unfortunately, Virtual Earth hang the browser window repeatedly when this editor was trying to explore the 3D cities.)

Georeferencing Workshop Materials Available Online
Material from the Georeferencing Workshop held in March is now available for viewing and download. Material includes presentation videos, PDF files of the presentations, posters, and handouts associated with the workshop.

Photo GPS now available for Harvard Use
CGA has purchased an ATP photofinder GPS that is now available for use by Harvard ID holders. This GPS is simple to use. Synchronizing the GPS time with your camera’s time, turning the unit on while taking photos, and then inserting your camera flash card into the unit will stamp each photo with latitude longitude of the picture location. Uploading the photos to Picasa will automatically make a Google map showing the photo locations. The GPS data can also be exported into KML format. Contact us at contact@cga.harvard.edu if interested in using.

GIS Book Requests
The CGA has acquired funding to purchase GIS books for inclusion into the Harvard Library system. What books are of interest? Browse a list of potential books and/or add a book of interest. Harvard login is required.

LandScan Data – China Earthquake Map
The LandScan Dataset is a worldwide population database compiled on a 30” X 30” latitude/longitude grid. Census counts (at sub-national level) were apportioned to each grid cell based on likelihood coefficients, which are based on proximity to roads, slope, land cover, nighttime lights, and other information. LandScan has been developed as part of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Global Population Project for estimating ambient populations at risk. LandScan datasets are released annually, and CGA has acquired the latest release (2006). More info on LandScan:
http://www.ornl.gov/sci/landscan/landscanCommon/landscan_doc-main.html
CGA used LandScan and USGS data to create a map showing the affected regions of the recent China earthquake displaying a population density grid and epicenter magnitude and location information:

ArcGIS 9.3 Available for Evaluation
CGA has received from ESRI the ArcGIS 9.3 release candidates for the following products: ArcGIS Desktop (ArcInfo, ArcEditor ArcView), ArcGIS Server (Windows and UNIX), and ArcIMS. If you are a Harvard ID holder and want to evaluate these products, please email contact@cga.harvard.edu to borrow the install DVD.

New China Datasets Available
The data company SRC and the University of MichiganÆs China Data Center have joined forces to offer subscription-based access to a detailed version of the China 2000 census data which includes township level data and thousands of variables: www.DemographicsNowChina.com

Harvard has two higher level China data publications available for use by Harvard affiliates on CD in the Map Collection or from HGL with a Harvard ID number and PIN.ááThe first is the historical county population census data from 1953, 1964, 1982, 1990, 2000. The variables are different for each year, but at a minimum they include the total population per county and the number of households. The layers in this publication can be accessed directly: http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.gisdata:009900120.

The second dataset is the China 2000 county population census which includes 2000 county boundaries integrated with more than 1,900 variables from the 2000 population census data for counties and urban districts. These layers can be accessed from: http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.gisdata:009898629.á Each layer for the 2000 census has many variables, and column names are cryptic. The descriptive column names are included in the metadata for each layer so it is important that users download the metadata file with the data.
