ArcGIS / Google Earth Interoperability Products
By using Google Earth’s KML file format it possible to display ArcGIS data and maps in Google Earth. Google Earth also provides users the ability to map features using GE’s global imagery as a basemap. The mapped data can then be loaded into ArcGIS for analysis or advanced cartography. Several software tools have been created and are very useful in helping to automate this exchange process:

Howard T. Fisher Prize Winners Announced in June
The Howard T. Fisher Prize for excellence in Geographic Information Science was established in 1999 to promote and reward student work in this broad and potentially interdisciplinary area, from both undergraduate and graduate students at Harvard University. Winners for the academic year 2006-2007 are Jaclyn Hatala, Adam Sachs, Kevin Bunker, and Corina Graif. Click the link below for more information about Howard T. Fisher, the award, and this year’s award winning projects.

Google Earth Pro Licenses Available
The CGA now has a limited number of Google Earth Pro licenses available for Harvard ID holders to use. In addition to accessing the same worldwide set of aerial imagery that is provided through Google Earth (free version), a Pro license allows for the import of shape-files, movie making, saving and printing the imagery in high resolution format, and more. To decide if the functionality GE Pro offers may pertain to your work, here is a comparison chart:

Contact CGA for license availability and installation procedures.

ESRI 2007 Technical Workshops Available Online
Each year ESRI provides technical workshops to educate GIS users on specific topics. These are 1.5 hour long seminars made available in audio visual format following the annual users conference, which concluded June 22 this year. CGA has uploaded the 170+ workshops for viewing, found on our Conferences and Events web page (click link below) under the 2007 ESRI Technical Workshop Sessions heading.
http://gis.harvard.edu/icb/icb.do?keyword=k235&tabgroupid=icb.tabgroup7644
Users need to be logged in to access the page containing links to the workshops, and then login again with the username and password listed to view the individual workshops.

Enhanced ERDAS Imagine Available for Download
This enhancement addresses several urgent issues in ERDAS IMAGINE 9.1 remote sensing software. In particular, HDF, TIFF and FORMOSAT formats have undergone significant improvements and several bugs were also addressed in AutoSync, Mosaic, Viewer and Painted Relief. Find the service package available for download under the heading “ERDAS IMAGINE and Photogrammetry 9.1” at the web page below:
http://gis.harvard.edu/icb/icb.do?keyword=k235&pageid=icb.page28957

New Version of FME Available
The CGA has Safe Software’s Feature Manipulation Engine conversion software release 2007 for Windows and UNIX. Contact CGA to upgrade your FME to this version.

HARVARD GIS COMMUNITY NEWS

New Orleans Neighborhood Analysis Project Geocoding Document
During the spring semester of 2007 a group of students, researchers, and professors at Harvard and Cornell University worked together on a project aimed to provide public access to neighborhood, housing, economic, and market data for New Orleans. The information provided through this project (all performed pro bono) was used directly by communities still recovering from Hurricane Katrina. As part of this venture the New Orleans Neighborhood Analysis Project (NONAP) was launched in an effort to eventually create a web-enabled internet mapping service. NONAP members are actively working on several documents to be incorporated into the web portal, one of which goes into great depth regarding lessons learned and best practices of geocoding, written by Harvard Student (’07) Irina Gumennik:
http://isites.harvard.edu/fs/docs/icb.topic109643.files/Geocoding_Best_Practices-draft.pdf

Another interesting article on the evolution of geocoding:
http://www.directionsmag.com/article.php?article_id=2492&trv=1

Discount for International SPOT Imagery
The SPOT UCSB program offers subscribed universities a significant discount on SPOT satellite imagery for North America (see http://www.spot.ucsb.edu/). Just recently, it added a 30% discount for imagery outside of North America with the same subscription fee ($10,000/yr). Please contact CGA if you think this program is worth subscribing to for Harvard.

Emerging Mashups For the Geospatial Community

A mashup is a website or application that combines content from more than one source (usually public) into an integrated experience. Mapping mashups are quite common, one of the leading mashup examples is Google Maps and Earth, which allow for a novice computer user or “armchair geographer” to map features of interest on a global scale, and easily publish and share the mapped content. Additional players in the web mapping sector such as Yahoo!, Microsoft, and MetaCarta are now offering mashup interfaces. A podcast from Directions magazine nicely summarizes the emerging and growing application of mashups and how it involves the geospatial industry at:
http://www.directionsmag.com/images/podcasts/070529_don.mp3

The CGA is interested in knowing the full range of software products that are being used at Harvard for spatial analysis, mapping, image processing and other GIS related activities.  Please email us at contact@cga.harvard.edu to let us know if you use software other than the three site licensed packages (ESRI, Leica & FME) for GIS related tasks.  Examples may include but are not limited to
 Autodesk products, Matlab, MapPoint, MapInfo, and GeoDa.  Your responses will help us direct our limited resources to better support software that is widely used in the community.

Remote Sensing Workshop this Fall

The Center for Geographic Analysis (CGA) jointly with the Harvard University Center for the Environment (HUCE) is planning to host a Remote Sensing Technology and Applications workshop sometime this fall. The objective is to provide useful information to faculty members and senior researchers by showcasing ongoing research at Harvard that uses remote sensing and to provide a high level, up-to-date overview of the technology and applications in this field. Topics may include:

  •    sensors (e.g. multi-spectrum, hyper-spectrum, LiDAR, Radar, etc.),
  •    data sources (e.g. Landsat, SPOT, IKONOS, IRS, Airborne images, etc.)
  •    sensor/data evaluation (e.g. resolution, quality, frequency, reliability, accessibility, cost, etc.),
  •    software (e.g. Leica, ENVI, eCognition, Feature Analyst, etc.),
  •    analytical methods (e.g. classification, fusion, feature extraction, etc.)
  •    application cases (e.g. environmental studies, public health, urban and social studies, anthropology, forestry, etc.), and
  •    vendor services in this field

We are looking for Harvard faculty and staff who have been doing remote sensing related research, both in the application fields and in sensors, data or analysis technologies, to form a RS workshop advisory group and a presentation panel. If you are interested in serving in either the advisory group and/or the presentation panel, please contact wguan@cga.harvard.edu or Richard_Minard@harvard.edu. We may also invite some external technology providers to give presentations, based on your inputs.

HARVARD GIS COMMUNITY NEWS

New Look for the Harvard Geospatial Library

After extensive user testing, a complete redesign of the Harvard Geospatial Library (http://hgl.harvard.edu) will be unveiled on January 26, 2009.  The map navigation tools will use the open source OpenLayers interface, and will be more intuitive.  Updates to the metadata database and better indexing will give users more reliable and meaningful search results, and we have added an “advanced search” screen that will allow searches by title, topic, location, and date.  The site will still let users view multiple GIS layers on demand and download data from the collection of over 6,000 vector layers, raster layers and scanned historic maps.  There is also a spatial browse that will list the layers that have features within the area shown on the map - change the map area and the list will automatically update.

Anyone can use and search HGL, although about one quarter of the layers are limited to Harvard affiliates due to licensing restrictions.  For more information about HGL, please email: hgl_ref@hulmail.harvard.edu.

Remote Sensing Technology and Applications Workshop

Friday, February 16, 2007. 1:00-6:00pm, at CGIS South Building, Rm.010, 1730 Cambridge St., Cambridge, MA.

We have all seen beautiful images of the earth from space, and detailed photos of cities taken from airplanes. As of today, many different satellites are orbiting the earth, mounted with diverse sensors. Countless aircrafts have flown, or can be scheduled to fly, along designated paths, to take conventional or specialty pictures of the earth surface. Both space-borne and airborne sensors can cover a wide range of electromagnetic spectrum, generating enormous amounts of valuable data. Applications of such remotely sensed data are diverse. Examples include wild fire monitoring, crop production estimation, weather forecasting, urban sprawl trend detection, and many more.

Come join us to learn more about GIS and remote sensing technology, and possible applications to your areas of teaching and research:

  • Hear an overview of this dynamic discipline from Professor John Jensen, Carolina Distinguished Professor;
  • See how Harvard faculties and scientists use remote sensing technology in their research fields, including public health, ecology and environmental studies, archaeology and history;
  • Learn the commonly used remote sensing data types and sources from a NASA scientist;
  • Participate in a discussion on how the Center for Geographic Analysis may better serve the Harvard user community; and
  • Take away reading materials about public and commercial services on remote sensing data, image analysis software, and consultation.

Please register (free) and view the detailed program of this event.

Two New Staff Joining CGA in Early February

CGA is happy to announce that two Senior GIS Analysts, Jeff Blossom and Ben Lewis are joining the team in early February.

Jeff Blossom has over 11 years working in the GIS industry as a technician, analyst, developer, and manager. Prior to joining the CGA, Jeff was the GIS Photogrammetry Administrator for the City and County of Denver. Jeff’s responsibilities at Denver included managing all aspects of Denver’s impervious surface mapping effort for stormwater utility billing, providing project management for imagery and data acquisition projects, and serving as Chairman of Denver’s GIS Steering Committee. Jeff earned a M.A. in Geography from the University of Denver in 2002. For his Masters project Jeff created a DEM and derived mapping products for sediment studies in a Colorado watershed severely burned by wildfire. Jeff’s work experience also includes serving as a GIS Analyst for the Los Alamos National Laboratory, New Mexico, the U.S.G.S. in Lakewood, CO, and an internship at ESRI’s Denver office.

Ben Lewis has been a project manager with Advanced Technology Solutions of Pennsylvania since 1999, where he led the company in adopting platform independent approaches to GIS system development. Ben studied Chinese at the University of Wisconsin and has a Masters in Planning from the University of Pennsylvania. After U. Penn, Ben worked at the UC Berkeley GIS Lab, managed the GIS group for the transportation engineering firm McCormick Taylor, and coordinated the Land Acquisition Mapping System for the South Florida Water Management District. Ben is especially interested in technologies that lower the barrier to GIS access.
