Celebrate GIS Day with the CGA
Come and join us on Wednesday, November 20th, a unique fun day for GIS lovers! Admission is free. Three activities will be taking place:
Location: Meet at the entry to the Lamont Library, Harvard Yard.
Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of Howard Fisher’s appointment at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Fisher founded the Laboratory for Computer Graphics (later, the Laboratory for Computer Graphics and Spatial Analysis), which was incubated in Memorial Hall. The Lab concentrated a series of people and projects that fashion the software and hardware which seeds the beginnings of a computer mapping approach and that of geographic information systems (GIS). Borrowing and significantly extending the process of mapping quantitative spatial information from Ed Horwood and his students at the University of Washington (the catalyst for a 1950s/1960s revival of geographic analysis), Fisher and the Lab formulated many of the methods that underpin modern representations of statistical surfaces. Among the many individuals that worked with Fisher, Jack Dangermond (MLA 1969) emerged to form Environmental Systems Research Institute (now Esri) in Redlands, CA. On GIS Day, Nov. 20th, Matthew W. Wilson, a visiting faculty at Harvard, will introduce the Howard Fisher Collection and guide participants through some of the more exciting materials, exploring the connections between contemporary digital mapping and the techniques forged in the early days of the Lab under Howard Fisher.
Location: Room S050, CGIS South building, 1730 Cambridge St., Cambridge, MA
“3D Modeling on a Campus Scale” will be presented by Niels la Cour, Alexander Stepanov, and Lukasz Czarniecki of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
Abstract: Planning on a campus scale requires adequate and up-to-date understanding and awareness of the campus physical environment, campus systems and interactions between them. Use of campus 2d/3d models, which incorporate existing GIS data, architectural drawings, building information, space and organizational use, can facilitate the planning process and foster communication between stakeholders. In addition, such integrated campus models are a necessary base for decision support systems and methodologies. However, the creation of such models from multiple and diverse sources, as well as keeping these models current, may be a challenging and time-consuming task. In this presentation we will discuss and demonstrate our approach and workflows for integrating CAD floor plans, building models (BIM/Revit), space and organizational data into the GIS environment. Specifically we will address data interoperability issues and application of Feature Manipulation Engine (FME) and CityEngine for translating and re-creating existing buildings into the GIS environment.
Location: The lobby of the CGIS Knafel building at 1737 Cambridge St., Cambridge, MA
Writer Paul Salopek is walking from Africa to Tierra Del Fuego, South America, recreating the path of human migration, and writing stories along the way. The CGA’s Jeff Blossom has been making maps and managing the geographic information for Paul along his journey, and these maps will be showcased in a poster exhibit. The project is also sponsored by National Geographic, whose December issue (released November 16th) will feature the Walk as its cover story. More on the Walk: http://www.outofedenwalk.com/

WorldMap (http://worldmap.harvard.edu) is pleased to announce a new cartographic tool called “Classify” for building complex map symbolizations. The tool allows a researcher to select map variables (such as census values) and quickly render new visualizations of their data. The user can choose the number of categories to be generated, the colors used, and the classification technique employed. Classification methods include: Unique Values, Quantile, Equal Interval, and Jenks Natural Breaks. This capability was funded by the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study (http://www.radcliffe.harvard.edu) and the Boston Area Research Initiative (http://www.bostonarearesearchinitiative.net).

Thursday May 1st 1:00pm-5:00pm: Contributors’ Meeting (by invitation only)
Friday May 2nd 9:00am-6:00pm: Open to the Public
In recent years, geospatial technologies have rapidly developed into online platforms, attested to by the rise of web-based GIS, the geoweb, and cyberinfrastructure. Although guided by different kinds of motivation and under other kinds of pressure, public and private institutions of higher education and for-profit education companies have increasingly turned to online platforms to enhance as well as diversify their outreach. From remotely delivered credit courses to massive open online courses (MOOC), education of any subject, including geospatial topics, is increasingly offered online.
What can be learned from these trends? How are they currently connected to each other, and how might new connections be made, to leverage one to enhance the other –
(1) using online education as a means to advance geospatial education, and
(2) using geospatial technology to enhance the online education of many disciplines?
This conference is aimed at reviewing the current status, achievements, lessons learned, unmet needs, challenges, potentials and perspectives of both geospatial online education and geospatial-enabled online education across the disciplines. Invited speakers will present their expert views, and engage the audience in a discussion on the following topics:

3:05-3:20 | Xin Lao | Title: The Economic Density Research Framework Construction in China’s Regional Economy Studies 中国区域经济研究中的经济密度研究框架建构 Abstract: With the rapid development of China’s economy, the economic density, as an important measure indicator of regional economy level, has played a positive role in coordinating regional economy and increasingly become a new perspective of the modern research on regional economy. Based on the brief review of international and domestic literatures on economic density, this article systematically establishes China’s economic density research framework respectively from the viewpoint of theoretical research and empirical research, which means constructing a complete research system including density model, dynamic mechanism, influence effect and all-around empirical research(consisting of indicators, scales, periods and methods), and provides related case studies for reference in the empirical research section. From the above, we aim at indicating the direction of further research on China’s economic density, which will have important theoretical, method and policy implications for the economic geography and regional economy studies.
