Map creation for a Harvard Business School business case

Mapping and Analysis for the Milwaukee Area Renters Study

The Milwaukee Area Renters Study led by principal investigator Matthew Desmond, Assistant Professor of Sociology and Social Studies at Harvard, collects survey data on ~1,000 people renting property.  Detailed demographic information and details on housing conditions, tenant behavior, landlord policies and more are collected and analyzed.  CGA has made many maps and analyses for this project.

Map below:  Nuisance property citations (a property that has 3 or more calls for police service in a 30 day period) per block group correlate to black population.

Mapping Basic Education and Equity in Cameroon

Two weeks of training on GIS, map creation, GPS, spatial thinking, and data manipulation was provided to two members of the Cameroon Ministry of Basic Education, and one UNICEF member.  Dozens of choropleth maps were created, and uploaded to WorldMap along with other geographic data for Cameroon.

Mapping Fracking Workshop taught for Harvard School of Public Health

The CGA taught a 2.5 day workshop on various ways to use GIS and mapping to help understand the effects of fracking on the environment and humans.  Organized in conjunction with the HSPH, the workshop attendees included researchers and policy makers from across the U.S.

Creating a GIS for the West Roxbury neighborhood in Boston

A GIS containing 20 layers and thematic maps was put together and delivered to the researcher. Datasets included school, open space, and business locations, and income, % population employed by retail, and commute time thematic maps.

Mapping support for the movie “The Supreme Price”

Maps were made for a movie “The Supreme Price” about a woman from a political family in Nigeria.  Maps were meant to show the diversity of Nigeria, and will be featured in the film, to be released early in 2015.

Map on top: Map made to simulate the typical in flight map one sees in an airplane.  Used during the beginning of the movie, when the main character is flying Air France from Paris to Lagos.

Maps on bottom (upper left to lower right): Ethnic groups in Nigeria; Lauguages; Biafra seceded from Nigeria in 1967: this state shown in red, the rest of Nigeria colored like the Nigerian flag; Predominant religion.

Mapping for the Out of Eden Walk project

The Out of Eden Walk is a 21,000-mile journalistic endeavor to create a global record of human life at the start of a new millennium as told by villagers, nomads, traders, farmers, soldiers, and artists who rarely make the news.  Sponsored and hosted by National Geographic Society, the project is led by Pulitzer Prize winning writer Paul Salopek who is walking the path of human migration across the globe, and recording what he encounters in the form of writing, photographs, video, and audio.

As a partner in this project the CGA’s role includes mapping Paul’s walking route from his GPS data, custom thematic map creation, essay writing and cartographic education by the CGA’s Jeff Blossom.  A sample of maps created are shown below.  To see the full collection, visit the Map RoomToward the project’s educational focus, Jeff has provided hands on cartographic education centered around the Walk to the following K-12 classrooms:

Map 1 below: Shows exposed sea beds at the human migration started, and the rough path humans took.

Map 2: uses Fuller projection and spectral coloring scheme to illustrate distance traveled and time required for humans to travel this path.

Map 3: Thematic map of elevation to illustrate the undulating nature of the first leg of the walk.

Map 4: Ancient Islamic pilgrimage routes to Mecca overlaid with Paul’s walking route and Lawrence of Arabia’s travels .
