GPS Data Collection - Spring 2018

This workshop will introduce the concept and various uses of the Global Positioning System (GPS). Students will use mapping GPS devices in the field, and upload the mapped data into desktop and internet mapping applications. Intended for students researchers who plan to use GPS for their field work. Note: This workshop includes time outside, so dress accordingly. Bring your own GPS unit, if you have one.

Wrangling Data into Maps - Longwood- Spring 2018

The ability to ‘wrangle’ various forms of data into a GIS is necessary in order to produce maps or analysis. Students will learn how to convert and properly geo-reference raw data in text form into GIS format, find and import relevant publicly available data, and produce a map of the results.

Getting to Know ArcGIS Network Analyst - Spring 2018

This workshop teaches how to use network data and ArcGIS Network Analyst software. We will explore street dataset to generate a network dataset and then use it to find optimal facility locations based on your criteria. We will develop an OD cost matrix to finds and measures the least-cost paths along the network from multiple origins to multiple destinations. Finally we will explore the location-allocation functionality to maximize health-care facilities attendance.

Remote Sensing for Land Use Change Analysis - Spring 2018

One popular use of remote sensing is the analysis of land use change over time.  In this workshop, students will learn how to search for and download free Landsat data; how to prepare these data for analysis; and how to examine land use change over time. We will be using ArcGIS and IDRISI Selva, both of which are available to Harvard affiliates on the CGA website. This class is meant to build off of introductory GIS and Remote Sensing workshops.
