Getting to know ArcGIS Network Analyst - Spring 2017

This workshop teaches how to use network data and ArcGIS Network Analyst software. We will explore street dataset to generate a network dataset and then use it to find optimal facility locations based on your criteria. We will develop an OD cost matrix to finds and measures the least-cost paths along the network from multiple origins to multiple destinations. Finally we will explore the location-allocation functionality to maximize health-care facilities attendance.

Wrangling Data into Maps - Cambridge - Spring 2017

The ability to ‘wrangle’ various forms of data into a GIS is necessary in order to produce maps or analysis. Students will learn how to convert and properly geo-reference raw data in text form into GIS format, find and import relevant publicly available data, and produce a map of the results.

Remote Sensing for Land Use Change Analysis - Spring 2017

One popular use of remote sensing is the analysis of land use change over time.  In this workshop, students will learn how to search for and download free Landsat data; how to prepare these data for analysis; and how to examine land use change over time. We will be using ArcGIS and IDRISI Selva, both of which are available to Harvard affiliates on the CGA website. This class is meant to build off of introductory GIS and Remote Sensing workshops.

Worldmap Introduction - Spring 2017

The Center for Geographic Analysis is developing WorldMap (http://worldmap.harvard.edu/), an open source platform designed to encourage collaboration between researchers who need access to geospatial information. Despite the many ways in which research materials can now be accessed and shared across the web, the methods suitable for geospatial materials lag. The reasons are many and interconnected: 1) the sparse implementation of standards, 2) the size and complexity of geospatial datasets, 3) the lack of a platform to support geospatial collaboration that is easy to access, 4) the lack of an incentive for researchers to upload geospatial datasets to a system that supports eventual sharing. WorldMap attempts to address all of these problems. Participants will learn about how WorldMap works and how to use it to become an accomplished online map maker.

Building an Open Source, Real-Time, Billion Object Spatio-Temporal Search Plaform

This project addresses the need to manage real-time streaming flows of Big-Data, and presents a method for storing, indexing, visualizing and querying a test dataset of archived Geo-tweets.  The  Billion Object Platform(BOP) provides a client and API to browse and search the latest 1 billion geotagged tweets (about 3 months range), using an open source stack of Apache Lucene, Solr, Kafka, Zookeeper, and frameworks Swagger, scikit-learn, OpenLayers, and AngularJS.
