Join us for a workshop on the Pleaides Project with

Tom Elliott, Ph.D.
Associate Director for Digital Programs and Senior Research Scholar
Institute for the Study of the Ancient World (NYU)

Date and Time: March 23, 2016 5:30-7:30pm
Location: Room S030 (Lower Level), CGIS South Building, 1730 Cambridge Street

The Pleiades Project is hosted and operated by the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World at New York University in collaboration with the Ancient World Mapping Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Pleiades provides free and open access to the most comprehensive geospatial dataset for antiquity available today. It serves as an indispensable component of at least 40 other important digital humanities projects, ranging from online editions of primary sources for students to expert systems supporting advanced research in fields like archaeology, epigraphy, and numismatics. It also constitutes a core resource for classroom activities focused on ancient geography.

This workshop will begin with a concise overview and introduction to Pleiades, its mission, and capabilities. Dr. Elliott will summarize current work-in-progress and planned improvements under the aegis of Pleiades’ current NEH grant.

The rest of the workshop will focus on interests of audience members as articulated in open discussion. It may touch upon some or all of the following:

  • How is information organized in Pleiades?
  • How does one download and make use of Pleiades data in other formats?
  • How is new content added to Pleiades and what is the editorial review process like?
  • How can I publish my geographical information through Pleiades?

Workshop attendees are encouraged to bring their laptops so they can follow along interactively.
