Presentation by Dr. Jason Ur, Professor of Archaeology and Director of the Archaeology Program, Department of Anthropology, Harvard University.
Room S050, CGIS South Building, 1730 Cambridge St.
Many of the most significant research questions in archaeological research are inherently spatial, especially those of relevance to the origins and early development of states and empires in the Middle East. This presentation will review some of the major topics (urban structure and development, networks of movement, agricultural systems) that I have investigated over the past two decades, with particular focus on the remote sensing datasets: declassified satellite photographs from the CORONA, GAMBIT, and HEXAGON programs (1960-1984), and aerial photographs from the U2/CHESS program. All have spectral and geometric challenges, but all provide high resolution views of sites and landscapes that often can be confirmed and extended with field-based survey techniques.
Lunch will be served
