Upcoming GIS Technical Training Workshops

CGA offers several non-credit technical training workshops related to GIS (Free to Harvard affiliates but registration is required). The workshops are:

  • Geo Humanities with Omeka Neatline, by Paul Cote, 4:00 – 6:00pm, January 29th, 2015
  • GIS Basics with ArcGIS - Cambridge, by Sumeeta Srinivasan, 1:00 – 3:00pm, January 30th, 2015

CartoDB Workshop

CartoDB is a simple to use mapping tool with powerful applications. The dynamic interface allows users to create maps that update instantly to reflect data changes, making it ideal for planning, coordinating, and communicating data at the city government level.  This workshop will feature several real-world examples of how CartoDB is being used in government, industry, and education, and will include hands-on demonstrations. Boston Fire Insurance Atlases

The Harvard Geospatial Library has recently added another batch of Fire Insurance Atlases in georeferenced form, showing Boston between 1895 and 1899.  http://hgl.harvard.edu

China 2010 Township Census Data

The Harvard Map Collection has acquired a single seat license for the 2010 census of China at the township (as points) level from the China Data Center at the University of Michigan.  The data can be accessed by Harvard affiliates in the Map Collection reading room, Pusey Library.  This complements the existing license for the 2010 Census at the county level. 

 

CONFERENCES, CALLS, EVENTS & EMPLOYMENT

Preceptor in Geospatial Analysis Position

Harvard University seeks applications for a preceptor in Geospatial Analysis. The appointment is expected to begin on July 1, 2015.  The preceptor will be responsible for designing and teaching introductory undergraduate and graduate courses in geospatial analysis, including geographic information systems (GIS), global positioning systems (GPS), remote sensing and related geospatial science and technology, primarily for students in the social sciences and environmental sciences. In addition, the preceptor will work in collaboration with faculty and the Center for Geographic Analysis to develop GIS tools and geographic data for various courses in the social sciences, environmental sciences, and humanities.  More details can be found: http://gis.harvard.edu/resources/opportunities/preceptor-geospatial-analysis

Call for Papers: The 1st International Workshop on Spatiotemporal Computing

The 1st International Workshop on Spatiotemporal Computing (IWSC) aims at exploring the possibilities of spatiotemporal computing in addressing our societal challenges from global to local regions by bringing together people with different backgrounds and expertise. It is also the objective to capture the latest advancements of spatiotemporal computing and related topics. Abstract submission is due January 1st, 2015. Call for Papers: Early-Career Scholars Institute in GIScience

The summer of 2015 marks the twenty-year anniversary of the International Early-Career Scholars Institutes in GIScience. The organizers and participants in those previous Institutes in co-sponsorship with the Vespucci Initiative invite a new generation of early-career GIScience scholars to with join us to explore Advancing Geographic Information Science: The Past and Next Twenty Years.
