CGA NEWS

CGA’s Fall Workshop Dates
Each semester CGA offers instructor-led non-credit technical training workshops to introduce GIS concepts and teach the basics on how to use GIS software. Workshops are free, offered on Friday afternoons. Learn more about them, view the schedule, register online, and even download the materials for self-study at:
http://gis.harvard.edu/icb/icb.do?keyword=k235&pageid=icb.page24711

CGA Office Relocation; Help Desk Change to Tuesday
Beginning October 1, 2008, the CGA will move from our 2 offices on the 3rd floor of the CGIS North building into a much larger space on the concourse (basement) level of the same building. The new space is adjacent to the HMDC computing facility, and will feature 3 large screen TV’s displaying CGA and GIS content, visible to passerbys on the concourse level. The move will create a reception area for CGA, and a new place to conduct the Cambridge Help Desk. Also starting in October the weekly Help Desk hours will be moved from Mondays to Tuesdays, 1:30 to 4:00 p.m.

ArcLogistics and PLTS for ArcGIS available
CGA has received ArcLogistics Route 3 Tele Atlas Data (1st quarter of 2008) and the ArcGIS 9.3 Production Line Tool Set (PLTS) media kit, which are available for use by any Harvard ID holder. To get a copy of these products please contact us:
contact@help.cga.harvard.edu

IDRISI Software Available for Download
Clark Labs software products are now available for download from our web site. We have the “Idrisi Andes” GIS and Image Processing software system, the “CartaLinx” data management tool and the “Land Change Modeler” software extension for ArcGIS. Access them from our download software page:
http://gis.harvard.edu/icb/icb.do?keyword=k235&pageid=icb.page28957

ArcGIS 9.3 Stand Alone Student Versions are Here
CGA has received the student versions of ArcGIS 9.3. They are stand-alone, non networked versions of ArcGIS ArcView software, version 9.3, on DVD. To get a copy please contact us: contact@help.cga.harvard.edu. Due to decreased operating speed and known bugs with 9.3, CGA recommends using version 9.2 until this 9.3 service pack is available, unless you need the added functionality 9.3 offers.

ESRI has announced service pack 1 for ArcGIS 9.3 will be available in November, 2008.

Seminar on Geographic Information Science
Dr. David McGuire, the Chief Scientist at ESRI, will be presenting a Seminar at Harvard on Friday, September 26th. Two sessions will be held, one at SEAS and one at CGIS. More details will follow in a separate announcement.

Global Data Visualization Project
CGA has recently completed the Global Data Visualization (GDV)project for the Harvard Business School. The project goal was to animate historical data on globalization to facilitate the teaching of business history. In particular, it provides key background historical data for topics covered in the MBA EC elective on Entrepreneurship and Global Capitalism. The resulting animations CGA helped create are online:
http://people.hbs.edu/jmartini/gdv/gdv2.html

The tool used to batch create the maps for the animation can be applied to any shapefile or feature class, and is available for download to any Harvard affiliate (after logging in) on the lower left of our download page:http://gis.harvard.edu/icb/icb.do?keyword=k235&pageid=icb.page28957
