CGA NEWS
GIS Summer Institute Completed
CGA concluded the 1
st
Harvard GIS Institute on 6/19 with 27 student project presentations. Over the course of two weeks, participants were given a comprehensive introduction to geographic information science and technology, performed instructor led hands-on use of ArcGIS and similar softwares, went on tours of GIS resources on campus, and attended guest presentations from researchers using GIS from a diverse range of disciplines. ABCD-GIS Presentation: Timeslider App and GeoDjango
Harvard’s ABCD-GIS group and the CGA are sponsoring a presentation by researcher Bo Zhao at noon on July 15th, in Room SO50 in the CGIS South building, in Cambridge. Mr. Zhao’s presentation will feature “A Web based solution for temporal-spatial visualization” and “Using GeoDjango for user participation in enriching web GIS systems”. View the flyer:

GPS User Recognized
Harvard Humanitarian Initiative affiliate Dr. Kristian Olson was recognized by Scientific American magazine as a top ten contributor for using technology to contribute to humanity. The list includes Obama and other notables. Dr. Olson used one of CGA’s GPS’s for his work in Indonesia (mentioned in the article):

CONFERENCES
ESRI International Users Conference
This conference will be held July 13 – 17 in San Diego, CA. It is the largest annual gathering of GIS practitioners worldwide, and features numerous sessions, workshops, and events. It is also a great opportunity to meet one on one with ESRI technical staff to troubleshoot ESRI software problems. CGA staff member Guoping Huang will be attending the conference, and will bring along questions for ESRI technical staff. If you have any ESRI questions or problems, please email contact@help.cga.harvard.edu and they will be presented to ESRI staff at the conference. More on the conference:

International Map Exhibition Call for Entries
The U.S. National Committee of the International Cartographic Association (ICA) is accepting current publications of maps, atlases, and other cartographic products to the Cartographic Exhibition at the 2009 International Cartographic Conference in Santiago, Chile. The 24th International Cartographic Conference will convene in Santiago the week of 15-21 November 2009. Submission forms for entry are due June 24, 2009.

Geomatica Volunteered Geographic Information – Call for Papers
Geomatica, the Journal of Geospatial Information Science, Technology and Practice, is the quarterly peer-reviewed journal of the Canadian Institute of Geomatics.
