ArcGIS 9.3.1 Available for Download

ESRI Software Site License Renewed
If you have seen warnings saying your ArcGIS product will expire in several days when you launch ArcGIS recently, don’t panic! CGA has renewed Harvard’s ESRI Software Site License, so the warnings will disappear soon.
 
CGA GIS Summer Workshops
CGA is offering these popular non-credit GIS workshops again this summer. On July 31, Jeff Blossom will teach Wrangling Data into Maps. On August 10, Sumeeta Srinivasan will teach Making Sense out of Spatial Data.  Both workshops are from 1pm to 3pm on Fridays at CGA training room. For reservation and details, please visit:

ArcGIS Business Analyst Online Trial Subscription
ArcGIS Business Analyst Online is a web based service that offers extensive demographic, consumer spending, and business data for the entire U.S.  The CGA has obtained a free trial license to use this product, available to any Harvard ID holder by contacting us at contact@help.cga.harvard.edu.  For more information on BA Online:

ArcPad 8 and StreetMap Premium North America Available

Fisher Prize in GIS 2008-2009 Awards
The Center for Geographic Analysis and the Committee of the Howard T. Fisher Prize in Geographical Information Science, Harvard University, are pleased to announce the awardees for the academic year 2008-2009:  
 
Undergraduate Category 
·         Ms. Shubha Lakshmi Bhat

Harvard College Class of 2009, for the entry entitled “Element of Survival: Isolating the causal effect of access to iodized salt on child health in India,” prepared as part of a Senior Thesis in Economics and Health Policy.
 
Graduate Category 
·         Ms. Alisha Holland

Department of Government, for the entry entitled “The Electoral Battle After the War; A Spatial Analysis of Crime and Conservative Party Politics in El Salvador,” prepared as part of a final project for Gov 1016.
We congratulate Ms. Bhat and Ms. Holland for their achievements and wish them future success.

Global Potential for Wind-generated Electricity
This is a paper written by Harvard’s Xi Lu, published by the National Academy of Sciences.  A significant amount of mapping and analysis using GIS was necessary to accomplish this research.  The CGA provided initial consultation and ad hoc help along the way.  Read the paper:

CONFERENCES

 
Multi-level Modeling Workshop

The CGA’s Sumeeta Srinivasan attended this five-day workshop, led by Kelvyn Jones of University of Bristol, U.K., and S.V. (Subu) Subramanian of Harvard University.  The workshop introduced the concepts and applications of multilevel statistical modeling, particularly in a spatial and demographic context. This course can be taken online at:

The software used in the course is available on the computers in the HMDC computer lab in Cambridge.

 

ESRI User Conference 2009 Report

CGA’s GIS Specialist Guoping Huang is just back from the 2009 ESRI User Conference. He brought back a detailed report on the conference that includes information on ESRI’s lastest products, news and trends of GIS, and some cool posters.  Check out the report here:

AAG GIS Specialty Group 2009 Student Travel Awards
The American Association of Geographers Geographic Information Systems and Science Specialty Group (GISS-SG) is pleased to announce a competition for student travel awards to be used for a 2009 GIS-related conference held outside the applicant’s country of residence.  Awards consist of $500 (USD) each to attend a peer-reviewed, academic GIS-related conference.  For more information and to apply:

NEWS ON GIS RESEARCH AND SERVICES

 
Institute for Enabling Geospatial Scholarship

The Scholars’ Lab at the University of Virginia Library is now accepting applications for an NEH-funded “Institute for Enabling Geospatial Scholarship,” to be held in Charlottesville, Virginia in November 2009 and May 2010.

 

This program will bring together humanities scholars, software developers, and librarians and other cultural heritage professionals to discuss and develop geospatial tools, content, methods, policies, and infrastructure, in the context of open source and open access. Thirty-one leading academics, developers,

A pretty cool data repository search tool and the developer circumvented the Google Maps limitations by presenting just 10 search results at a time.
