CGA NEWS

 

Fall 2011 GIS Workshops Begin September 9th

Each semester CGA offers instructor-led non-credit technical training workshops to introduce GIS concepts and teach the basics on how to use GIS software. To attend, a Harvard affiliation is required. For self-study, anyone can download the power point presentations, as well as the PDF and data for the lab exercises. All workshops are on Fridays from 1:00 - 3:00 PM. Topics include:

  • GIS Basics with ArcGIS
  • Wrangling Data into Maps
  • Making Sense out of Spatial Data
  • Worldmap Training
  • GPS Workshop - 4 hours in duration
  • Getting the Most out of Google Earth
  • Intro to Remote Sensing
  • How to Create Google Maps Mashups
  • Open Source Desktop GIS with QuantumGIS
  • Database Design for GPS/GIS Applications

Harvard Google Earth Pro License Renewed

Google has granted 50 seats of Google Earth Pro license to Harvard University for classroom usage in the new academic year. This number is much smaller than the number of GE Pro licenses we had in the previous 5 years (260), and is no longer enough, nor appropriate, for individual distribution to all HUID holders.

 

If you need to use Google Earth Pro in a course you teach at Harvard, please email contact@help.cga.harvard.edu with your course name, lab location, semester, and the number of licenses needed. Please also explain why you cannot use the free version of Google Earth instead.

Esri SpatiaLABS Available

Esri Press SpatiaLABS are stand alone activities designed to promote spatial reasoning and analysis skills.  Harvard has been given site-wide access to the preliminary edition of these labs, which cover a wide variety of subject matter designed to illuminate spatial relationships, patterns and complexities.  The labs are installed on the T drive in the HMDC computer lab at 1737 Cambridge St.  To get a copy for installation on your server or desktop please contact CGA at: contact@help.cga.harvard.edu

Enhance Library Catalog Searching with Geospatial Technology

The Harvard Library Lab project “Enhance Library Catalog Searching with Geospatial Technology” has established a web site in order to provide those interested in the topic a chance to learn more about it. Also, it allows one to experiment with an interactive map that enables the spatial searching of a test set of 1,700 geocoded HOLLIS catalog records.

 

The informational web site includes: links to two test search systems, a screen cast explaining functions and features of the test search system, FAQs and query information, and most importantly a feedback form for your comments.

 

We encourage all to experiment with the demo systems and to provide feedback using the provided form or take the poll.  Your feedback will help us in determining the path the project takes for future phases. We are particularly interested in feedback about the ideas and concepts themselves as the user interface for the map is not a production system and does not represent the look and feel of a production application. The demo site will be available through mid September.

AAG Annual Student Paper Competition

The GIS Specialty Group of the American Association of Geographers has announced the 2012 Honors Competition for Student Papers on Geographic Information Science topics to be presented at the annual AAG meeting to be held in New York City, Feb. 24 – 28, 2012.  The deadline for paper submissions is October 3, 2011.  For more details:

Call for Applications: ACLS Digital Innovation Fellowships

The American Council of Learned Societies is accepting applications for the seventh annual competition for the ACLS Digital Innovation Fellowships.  This program supports digitally based research projects in all disciplines of the humanities and related social sciences.
